elvina mae-zing

Elvina-Mae Farkas. If you haven’t heard that name yet may I suggest you pick up a pen and jot it down (underlined) in your Smiggle notebook. She who recently shot editorial for Yen, Culture and Cream Magazines, just to name a few, can now add Melbourne Fashion Journal to her growing resume, having shot their feature story on non other than band du jour – Miami Horror. All this for a girl who only began to dip her fashionably clad feet in the photography pond a mere eight months ago? Luckily for me sometime before Christmas, I managed to wrangle a few trade secrets from the lady behind the camera and it is to my detriment that I am only just sharing this post with you now. If she ever forgives me I hope to one day be privy to witnessing one of her fashion shoots in the flesh, watching her work her magic from behind her Canon 5Dmkii

The seven-year-old child prodigy
Farkas’ earliest memory of ever picking up a camera was at the wee young age of seven. Begging her mother for a camera to take family snaps, she was gifted with a Nikon that came inscribed with her name on the back.

Now or never
It was only at the beginning of 2009 that Farkas made the decision to pursue photography as something more of a career choice rather than a passionate hobby. Having grown up living in Alice Springs (in a tiny town far removed from any form of the fashion/arts scene), moving to Melbourne was something of a risk. As it turns out this risk was to pay off greatly and much hard work and dedication lead to her first big break – being published in a ‘few’ popular overseas magazines (or so she humbly describes)

All things learning curves and trial and error
Having never studied photography, Farkas developed her talent behind the lens through a great deal of trial and error. Photography for her is, ‘something you just have to get a feel for, all the while trusting your instincts and judgments on what looks right’. Feedback and advice from trusted friends who are also industry photographers have been her greatest learning curves.

All things lighting and landscapes
Rule number ONE according to Farkas, ‘CHECK YOUR LIGHTING!’ She claims that lighting plays a vital role in photos as it basically creates the entire mood of any image. ‘Sunlight, artificial light, shadows, highlights, colored lights, no lights! Lighting is the simple most important thing in a picture’.

When asked whether she would like to stick solely to fashion photography, Farkas is certain this is where she wants to remain for the time being. ‘There is something about expressing yourself uniquely through clothing and styling that is captivating to me’. Funnily enough however, she originally began shooting landscapes. Having grown up in Central Australia surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country it isn’t hard to understand why.

Inspire me
Inspiration for Farkas comes in many shapes and forms. As far as photographers go however nothing impresses her more than those photographers who are willing to be strange or quirky. ‘Of course I love the legends, but I also really admire all the new kids on the block! At the moment I'm stuck onto Andrew Yee, Camilla Akrans and new goodies Waldemar and Max’.

please sir can i have some more?

I don't know why but for some reason these Country Road dark charcol side pocket sweat pants for Autumn/Winter 2010 collection reminded me of something that was worn by the orphans in Oliver Twist.
With winter a few months away, long johns that can be worn as outerwear with a pair of ankle boots nonetheless, are exactly what I will be wanting.
Buying these NOW. Because I'm all about pre-organising the winter wardrobe months in advance/have no self control to stop myself from purchasing un-necessary items whilst in the midst of a summer heatwave.

camilla and marc cherry frock

camilla and marc roma frock

camilla and marc benedict top

willow cascading asymmetrical side drape top

willow cut-wave dress with draped sleeve

camilla and marc grand prince tee

camilla and marc re-cut biker knee legging

I'm not going to lie, I'm not one for lots of colour or big on pretty feminine dresses but every once in a while I succumb to the girlie girl buried deep within and fall a little in love with all things, lace, pretty and sequinned.

However, when I logged onto mycatwalk.com last week to scope the latest in season fare, I nearly died at the sight of all the divine new items available for pre-order. Camilla and Marc got my heart when they offered up their ivory lace cherry frock and then Willow stole it completely with their cut wave dress.

But just when I thought my tastes had changed and I'd become a real lady, I spied a pair of Camilla and Marc re-cut biker leggings and their series of Grand Prince shoulder pad-studded tees and returned to my rock chick (wannabe) roots faster than you can say leather.

Now please help me choose which item I am allowed to put on my credit card this month??

the knitted quarterback

When you think American football you often think of huddles, head gear, receivers, Miller Lite beer and hot dogs. I doubt legions of football fans would think fashion.

Yet, behold Sandra Backlund.
It appears that Backlund (much like Alexander Wang spring/summer 10) has taken inspiration directly from the all American quarterback, in that its all about the super sized shoulders (rather than the super sized american meal deal). And might I say, she sure is on to a winning formula.

The blatantly overdone shoulders are accompanied by embellishments of the prettiest kind and each and every piece is handcrafted and knit by Backlund herself (she often sequesters herself in her studio with her knitting needles for hours on end). She is one of those designers whereby her pieces are more a work of art than a garment.

So whilst Backlund and her homeland of Sweden may know very little about American football, the concept of the knitted quarterback may be something that they and all those in the fashion know might want to look into - as it is essentially a garment that not only keeps you warm and looks on-trend, but has the potential to prevent injuries.

Backlund, you might say, is something of an all-rounder.

give me sun, give me dirt, give me water

The Waif's said it best when they sang, give me sun, give me dirt, give me water. The only thing they forgot to add (sand replacing dirt aside), was give me ZIMMERMAN.

I'm sure they just forgot to add in that last lyric when they wrote a song with sweet everlasting love in mind.

Sun plus sand plus water plus Zimmerman equals my idea of summer bliss.

Log on to zimmermanwear.com and their bold choice of patterns, colours and the combination of a mismatch of the two are purely and simply amazing.

They subtly manage to incorporate runway trends into their swimwear collection that are still practical enough to withstand the wear and tear of the surf. Case in point with their summer 09/10 collection where there are cut outs, tie backs, lace ups, corset boning and draping. This all may sound odd in reference to swimwear but I challenge you to find a pair that doesn't enhance your finer features.

I refuse to endure a summer long season without the purchase of at least one pair of Zimmerman's bikinis. This year however I am fighting an uphill sand dune battle. I have my eye on no less than three pairs but an old promise I made to myself wayyy back in June (to forgo the purchase of Zimmerman bikinis for an entire year due to the spend-age of a weeks plus wage on a pair of Fleur T for Topshop bikinis when I was in London) has returned to haunt me.

Lucky for me I don't live for the past, I live a little for the future (i.e the future beach parties I hope to attend) and a lot for the now.

So for now, the Zimmerman summer gods are pointing me in the direction of the Bittersweet Twist one-piece in orchid....and the Billow loop knot bikinis in lilac....and perhaps the Chelsea frill bandeau bikini in leopard print.
