urban upbringing

Sunday nights are usually reserved for flaking on the couch and nursing a sore head from the night before. This is exactly how I intended to spend my Sunday night last week. Instead I found myself in a graffitied Melbourne laneway rubbing shoulders with the uber cool and exceptionally fashionable at La Carte Blanche's Urban Upbringing fashion show.

If you didn't know any better you would have thought the invitation stressed black only (with a hint of Gothic), as there was barely a soul who wasn't dressed in the typical Melbourne uniform.

Walking past the beautiful people (who evidently existed that day to make me feel even worse) I made my way to my seat - a silver beer keg, which visually looked great but when your legs can barely touch the ground it doesn't make for very eloquent front row seating.

What followed was a parade of some of the most promising up and coming designers - all who managed to display that distinct Melbourne feel in each of their collections. Joseph Jang, Kosta J. Peters, Geoffrey Haining and Miss Lyndel Yeo provided us with lots of black, lots of leather, lots of structural pieces and even themes of fetish fashion.

sunshine on my window

Dear summer,

Please hurry back. I am freezing to within an inch of my life and no amount of chunky knits and gas heaters will compensate for your delightfully balmy 30+ degree days.

I want to be where Jennifer Aniston is on that beach, I want to be back in Sicily floating in the Mediterranean sea, I want my skin to be golden, I want to be clothed in nothing but bikinis and sand, I want freckles and skin bathed in sunscreen, I want to feel burnt and look like I'm forever blushing, I want red and yellow sunsets and wide brimmed hats because...

sunshine on my window, makes me happy, like i should be.

Yours truly,

Jade Rose

slacking off this summer

Slacks, trousers, kegs...the humble pant has many a name and without doubt, many a style. Of the minute however, you can't seem to go past the silk drawn harem pant. Sashaying down catwalks for miles, harem pants have been the light weight option that has shone bright this European summer. Seen on the fashion set at catwalk shows in colours of dusty pink, Chloe draped white silks and the ubiquitous goes-with-everything nero black - the harem pant has made a comeback of notable proportions.

So as we edge into warmer territory on this side fo the world, we are setting aside our heavy weight jeans and slipping on what the euro's have been sporting for months now (preferably a pair of the leopard print Isabel Marant kind). Meanwhile over in the northern hemisphere they are simply dragging out their finest ankle boots and in-season clogs to pair with their harem's instead.
And whilst I am the first to admit I rant and rave about my hatred for winter on a regular basis, I really am all about the harem pants, the patterned jean, the sequined legging and the wide set pant at the moment. Quite ironic really given summer is rearing its 30 plus degree head as I type. However, I am choosing to denounce the obvious and will hold my head high repeating the words, 'fashion first - appropriate seasonal weather items second'.

sex sells

Another week in fashion has passed us by and with that goes another few millions in revenue raised. No doubt in some small part thanks to a few editorials that got a plenty o'hearts a racing.

Introducing the divine Miss Anja Rubik with her real life prince charming Sasha Knezevic in the bi monthly men's magazine Man About Town where it was all about cavorting lovers in the sanctity of a forest. Then we had Michelle Buswell & Eva in French Revue De Modes Fall 09 with daring nudity, thigh high boots and the no-current-shoot-can-be-complete-without-them "mouse ears". To the eternally young Naomi Campbell in DT October 09. And lastly Terry Richardson's muse Natasha Poly nude for Muse#19.

In the world of fashion you would think its all about the clothes but dare I say it, I think these images prove that its anything but. I believe the old newspaper catch cry used to be 'Extra Extra Read All About It'....why do that when you can see it all with your own very eyes.
Sex sells, always has and always will.
